FUE technique for capillary grafting

Published in Capillary graft

Hair graft with the FUE method is the technique of hair implant that has greater demand in almost all centers specialized in this surgery, since it applies the most novel procedures to solve the problem of hair loss in a person, regardless of its gender.

What is the FUE technique?

A hair transplant using the FUE method, is a surgical intervention aimed at orderly re-assigning the hair follicles, based on the insertion of tiny hair implants that have the required follicular units, which are sets of 1, 2, 3 or 4 of these hair follicles.

The extraction of the mentioned implants will be carried out thanks to the administration of local anesthesia in the lateral or occipital area, the donor areas.

Once obtained, it will proceed to its exhaustive preparation with the help of a microscope to subsequently be inserted with care through tiny incisions in the recipient areas. That is, in the depopulated parts of the scalp that are most affected because of hair loss.

Is it possible that the grafted hair is lost?

When the implants are removed both from the lateral zone and from the occipital area of the head, they are systematized genetically to continue their development throughout life, since they have a series of hormone receptors that would not be influenced by an excess of activity of enzymes.

In other words, it can be guaranteed that, after insertion in the recipient areas, the implants will not detach and will continue to evolve in the expected manner.

How is a hair graft done with the FUE method?

As we commented at the beginning of this article, the procedure of individual extraction of follicles, also called FUE technique by its acronym -Follicular Unit Extraction-, is the most innovative method of capillary micro implant available today.

The purpose that the FUE technique pursues is none other than obtaining, one by one, the hair follicles from the donor area. For this, incisions are not necessary, an aspect that supposes different advantages, such as not requiring stitches to close them or not leaving considerable scars.

The extraction of the necessary follicular units in a capillary micrograft, will include both the hair follicles -from one to four in each unit- and the components that surround them, among which can be highlighted:

  • Capillaries of blood.
  • Oil gland.
  • Piloerector muscle

FUE method is the technique of capillary graft.

How is this FUE technique executed?

With the basic purpose of making it as easy as possible to obtain follicular units, it’s more than advisable to shave almost completely the donor area of the head.

However, if the person who is willing to undergo capillary grafting prefers to rule out this option but has requested the application of the FUE method, there is the alternative of hiding the shaved areas with layers of hair.

The FUE technique for capillary grafting consists of three distinct stages that we describe briefly below:

  1. First stage: in the initial phase, the hair follicles are carefully obtained thanks to the use of a small scalpel about 0.8 millimeters in diameter. In addition, it is essential that the hair surgeon possess the necessary skills and experience.
  2. Second stage: during this phase, the preparation of extracted follicles is carried out.
  3. Third stage: follicular units are grafted in the same way as in the FUSS method.

Is it essential to shave your head before surgery?

It has already been said in previous lines that obtaining the follicular units would be a much simpler process if the patient's head is shaved beforehand, as this would achieve the optimal length of the hair to be extracted.

However, it is not a vital condition for the performance of the hair graft. In this sense, if the patient has allowed the hair to grow for a certain time, partial shaving may be sufficient.

FUE technique in capillary graft outperforms the FUSS method.

Who usually rule out total shaving?

The previous one is a characteristic situation in female patients. Although they are undergoing a hair transplant to end his hair loss, it’s not easy to convince a woman that shaving the head completely would be the ideal choice.

But it’s not an exclusive case of women, there are other patients who, either because of their work or because of what others think of them, flatly reject the possibility that their appearance will undergo such a drastic change. This way, the privacy of them is respected in relation to their recent procedure in the operating room.

How many kinds of cranial shaving are there?

In short, it is possible to establish up to three different shaving modes:

  1. Complete: the scalp is shaved in its entirety. It’s only practiced under the patient's consent.
  2. Partial: the shaving focuses only on the donor area, without shaving the others. In this way, after a few days will be possible to level the hair length in all areas.
  3. Layers or flaps: as only parts of the donor area are shaved, hair from nearby areas will hide them perfectly, which is especially useful in female patients.

How are the ideal candidates for the FUE method?

For a person to be considered suitable for the realization of a hair graft through the FUE technique, he will have to fulfill the requirements that we will enumerate:

  • He suffers from a restricted and assumable capillary fall.
  • He has scarring alopecia in small areas.
  • He prefers to wear short hair without a linear scar.
  • The original density of the donor area is scarce.
  • You want to hide scars from previous surgeries.

If the patient did not meet the detailed conditions, he would have to opt for a different procedure, such as the FUSS (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery) method, also known as the strip method.

What is the greatest benefit of using the FUE capillary implant technique?

If a qualified and properly experienced hair surgeon has been chosen, the results of any hair grafting procedure will be magnificent.

However, if we compare the two most popular capillary techniques, it can be concluded that the FUE method for capillary grafting outperforms the FUSS method in a certain way for the following reasons:

  • The only resulting scars will be practically imperceptible.
  • The donor area retains its initial capillary density, since bands are not obtained.
  • The duration of the recovery phase is significantly reduced.
